The City of Fremantle's marketing department deserves a big WELL DONE! for the Freo Builds lego trail they conceived for the school holidays. The city is buzzing with lots of kids, parents and grandparents and many of our cafes are benefiting from it.
It is interesting to see that these so-called low hanging fruit campaigns work so well and really attract people to come to Fremantle. Many of us will remember about ten years ago placemaker David Engwicht telling us on tours around the city that we should concentrate more on the small things, instead of just the big campaigns.
That reminds me that I worked together with J Shed artist Greg James on the Framing Freo artworks that were installed at Kings Square, but then removed because they were considered too low and a safety hazard.
Only one of the three works is used next to the Roundhouse, but the other two, one two hearts-as for the heart of the city, and one in the form of a St John's church window, should be put back at Kings Square. Just put them on top of a small post, instead of attaching them to lampposts. It is a real shame they disappeared after all the effort Greg and I put in.
