McLaren's 765LT 'Longtail' coupe came last year, and promptly sold out. They can expect 765LT Spider to do the same. If only all car makers could match that record.

The lightweight coupe/spyder club is an exclusive one, and only 765 765LT Spiders will be made. It seems McLaren has a sense of humour.

The droptop opens in 11 seconds, but the real surprise is the weight of 1388kg. The weight is kept down by extensive use of carbon-fibre parts. The retractable top is a single piece of carbon fibre, and will open up to 50kph.

0-100 is dispatched on 2.7 seconds, and on to a max of 330kph. Yeah, not with me at the wheel.

The UK price is a princely £310, 500, so the Australian price will be double that number, or more. Power comes from a 4.0L twin turbo V8. The mid-engine spider packs a wallop with 563kw and 590Nm.

Like all McLarens, the 765LT Spider has a carbon fibre chassis, with aluminium crash structures front and back. Suspension is Independent adaptive dampers, dual aluminium wishbones, Proactive Chassis Control II (PCC II). Comfort, Sport and Track modes

Wheels are 19" front and 20" at the back, with a height of just 1193mm. that's a whole lot of humping down to get in.

C02 is a hefty 280g/k, but that's modest for such massive performance figures. Economy, if we can actually use that word, is between 22.1 and 10.2 L/100k, with a combined figure of an alleged 12.3L/100k.

Here's the kicker, Climate control and an audio system are No Cost options. They claim it saves weight, but who in their right mind isn't going to want either of those?
