Megaprojects have been accused of gobbling up concrete supplies, while steelmakers face a magnesium drought caused by China. Ian Anfield, managing director of Hudson Contract, which provides ­services to more than 2,500 construction firms, said small builders cannot compete for materials with mega-­projects such as HS2 and Hinkley nuclear power plant.
