Author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija has applied to court to have his bail terms relaxed to facilitate his forthcoming travel to Germany and also seek specialized medical treatment following his torture predicaments during his detention in unknown detention centers.
Appearing before Buganda Road court chief magistrate Dr Douglas Ssingiza on Tuesday, Kakwenza asked court to give back his passport so he can travel to Germany to receive the Pen award.
Kakwenza was announced the Pen Pinter writer of courage award winner 2021 for his book "The Greedy Barbarian" which details the injustices and corrupt systems in Uganda.
His passport is being kept by court as a bail condition following his release on 25th January.
However Dr Douglas Ssingiza the Chief magistrate has asked him to write formally to court, giving details of his travel and submit legal insurance. Court will decide this matter on Wednesday.
Kakwenza is facing charges of disturbing the peace of the president and his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba through his fictional writings via his twitter handle. The political fiction writer was arrested on Dec 28th, 2021 from his home in Kampala Following alleged tweets that were regarded as direct attacks to the first son and the president. He was kept in an unknown place for nearly a month. By the time of his release on Tuesday 25th Jan 2022, effects of torture were visible all over his body.
However court barred him and his lawyers from discussing anything about this case in public or the media.
He has appeared before court in company of his lawyers, international human rights defenders and political players.
