#AceNewsDesk - The US State Department has approved a potential $US1.1 billion ($1.6 billion) sale of military equipment to Taiwan, including 60 anti-ship missiles and 100 air-to-air missiles, the Pentagon said.

The package was announced in the wake of China's military drills around Taiwan following a visit to the island last month by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking US official to travel to Taipei in years.

The sale includes Sidewinder missiles and related equipment at a cost of some $US85.6 million, Harpoon missiles and related equipment at an estimated $US355 million cost and support for Taiwan's surveillance radar program and related equipment for an estimated $US665.4 million, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said.

Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, said in a statement the possible arms sale "severely jeopardises China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait".

"China will resolutely take legitimate and necessary counter-measures in light of the development of the situation," he said.

US President Joe Biden's administration said the package had been under consideration for some time and was developed in consultation with Taiwan and US politicians.

"As the PRC continues to increase pressure on Taiwan, including through heightened military air and maritime presence around Taiwan, and engages in attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, we're providing Taiwan with what it needs to maintain its self-defence capabilities," Laura Rosenberger, White House senior director for China and Taiwan, said in a statement.

The order reflects the continued support for Taiwan from Mr Biden's administration as Taipei faces pressure from China, which has never ruled out using force to bring the democratically ruled island under its control.

Taipei says the People's Republic of China has never ruled the island and has no right to claim it. The sale includes Harpoon missiles and related equipment at an estimated cost of $US355 million.(AP: Johnson Lai)none

US says arms will not alter region's military balance

The Pentagon said the equipment and support announced on Friday would not alter the basic military balance in the region.

US officials said the move did not reflect any change in policy toward Taiwan.

"These proposed sales are routine cases to support Taiwan's continuing efforts to modernise its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability," a US Department of State spokesperson said, requesting anonymity.

Taiwan's defence ministry expressed its thanks, adding that China's recent "provocative" activities represented a serious threat and the arms sale would help it face China's military pressure.

"At the same time, it also demonstrates that it will help our country strengthen its overall defence capabilities and jointly maintain the security and peace of the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region," the ministry said in a statement.

Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the US-Taiwan Business Council, said his organisation opposed what he termed a "limited approach" to arms sales to Taiwan.

"As [China's] People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently demonstrated in its mock blockade, the island faces a range of threats that require a range of capabilities," Mr Hammond-Chambers said in a statement.

"To deny the island the ability to mount a full defence will, over time, create new gaps in Taiwan's defences that the PLA can exploit."

The sales must be reviewed by US Congress, but both Democratic and Republican congressional aides said they did not expect opposition.Ms Pelosi was the highest-ranking US official to travel to Taipei in years.(Reuters: Taiwan Presidential Office)none

There have been at least two other visits to Taiwan by members of Congress from both parties since Ms Pelosi's visit, as well as by governors of US states, with all the visits condemned by Beijing.

The principal contractor for the Harpoon missiles is Boeing Co.

Raytheon is the principal contractor for both the Sidewinders and the radar program.
