This week, Tesla's Model Y excelled, not because it was an EV, but for being easy. It was easy to use, easy to drive, easy to charge, and above all worked as intended.

1: DashCam:

The inbuilt system watches while driving. While on the move, it is part of the architecture that also helps self driving. They're also used in the Sentry System but beware, it cost a lot of money to use. Sentry prevents the Model 3 from going to sleep. In its wakened state, it uses about 10% of it battery over night. 6Kwh is like leaving your hair dryer running for 6 hours. Most Teslas no longer have free charging, so at 58c p/h, running sentry overnight will cost you $3.50ish if you only use public charging. Stick to leaving Dashcam and make sure the Model 3 is safely locked up.

2: Ease of charging:

For those of us who can't charge at home, using a branded supercharger has its benefits. If you navigate to a supercharger, the system will prepare the battery enroute for fast charging.

When you get there, simply plug in and your Tesla takes car of the rest. It talks to the car and charges your account all without the driver ever having to use an app or card. Beware of overstaying as the fees are enormous.

3: Space

Like many other EVs, Model 3's ground up design eliminates the wasteful design inherent in ICE platforms. Therefore, the cabin feels roomy even in smaller EVs. There is no centre hump and the front and rear bulkheads don't have to accommodate transmissions and driveshafts. The space is use to laze and enjoy.

4: Inbuilt Smarts

Tesla says the infotainment system is easy to use, but it takes as much getting used to as anything else.

5: Voice Control

The more you get used toit, the better it gets, and the more superior you feel. It uses the collective brain, as Volvo's Google Android OS does.

6: Snob Value

Go on, admit it, you feel smug driving a Tesla. In fact many people still believe Teslas are the only EVs on the road.

7: Cheap Servicing

Brakes can last 180,000kms because Model 3 has one pedal driving. In fact, the Tesla service centre revealed very few brake pads of discs have been needed. There is no engine or transmission, so the only oil is in the shock absorbers, differential and in the fluid in the climate control and battery cooling system. Servicing is optional unless something goes wrong.

8: the Tesla Light Show

Tesla's goodie box brings out the inner bogan in us all. The entertainment system has built in streaming from Netflix and Disney+, but for a good time, hit the Light show in the Toy Box. After activating, leaving the car and shutting the door starts the programme.

It flashes TESLA as a projection onto the wall in front, opens and closes windows and doors, and flaps mirrors like a demented duck. Like Model X's gullwing flapping, this show of flashing lights and demented doors has a theme tune playing at top volume. You can turn the volume down of course, but why would you?

9: Silent operation

Tesla doesn't feel the need to make silly engine noises to simulate some experience ICE drivers feel is lacking. Tesla drivers need not this folly. Pedestrians will no doubt claim this to be dangerous. However, they might also watch where they're going.

10: Auto Pilot

What list would be complete without the alleged autonomous driving system.

Driverless cars are not yet a thing, and no government has been stupid enough to make it legal, and just as well. You must have your hands on the wheel even in AutoPilot mode. It will keep you in the lane and will try to avoid other vehicles. However, it will not anticipate idiot drivers, even those within the Tesla. Those morons on youtube driving a tesla from the passenger's seat are demonstrating Darwinism in action. They will die, of that there is no doubt.
