Despite the twists and turns of the last decade, I have had no reason to revisit the definition.  It is this: 'The aim for all pupils is to maximise their ability to operate as independent and autonomous learners.'  This is a useful measure to apply to your own practice and provides a sure step in making adjustments which will benefit all your learners as well as yourself.
