Over the course of my career, and in the subsequent research for my books, the key question has always been 'What are we trying to achieve with our pupils?' There were many iterations to this fundamental question, but it was during my time at the RSA Academy implementing the Opening Minds curriculum that what I came to regard as the definitive answer crystallised. Despite the twists and turns of the last decade, I have had no reason to revisit the definition. It is this:
'The aim for all pupils is to maximise their ability to operate as independent and autonomous learners.'
This is a useful measure to apply to your own practice and provides a sure step in making adjustments which will benefit all your learners as well as yourself.
