Former prime minister Scott Morrison has welcomed findings against former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian that she engaged in corrupt conduct when dealing with her former boyfriend and ex-MP Daryl Maguire.
"How good is ICAC?" an enthusiastic Mr Morrison told a news conference outside the Cronulla Sharks NRL club in his seat of Cook south of Sydney.
"I was very pleased to hear the results of ICAC's two-year probe of Gladys.
"I am especially pleased that although found to be corrupt, Gladys will not face criminal charges or face the prospect of spending time behind bars if then found guilty.
"It gives me great hope that the new federal anti-corruption commission might follow the same template when dealing with the any of the decisions taken under my prime ministership when it came to distribution of government funds among electorates for various programs.
"I continue to deny any wrongdoing and will always maintain that it remains clear to me that government funds must obviously get distributed among government electorates.
"That's always been my honest view and everyone knows just how honest I am," he said as reporters stifled laughs.
Mr Morrison was asked if he stood by earlier claims about ICAC being a kangaroo court.
"I never ever said that," he responded.
Mr Morrison was also asked why he had chosen to call a news conference outside the local Cronulla Sharks NRL clubhouse.
After looking around and scanning the building behind him, he replied: "Dunno. It's just a convenient spot. Easy parking. Who are the Sharks anyway?"
