Oak Bluff Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, MA
Biking in Martha's Vineyard is probably the most beautiful we ever encountered. And we did this each time for several years. First is the ferry ride, 45 minutes from Woods Hole, a charming beginning to a world apart.
Oak Bluff, Martha's Vineyard, MA
You start gliding through the gingerbread houses of Oak Bluffs inching toward the bike trail on the shore road towards Edgartown. A stop in town for ice cream and hop the 5 minutes ferry to Chappy, the endearing name of the Chappaquiddick Island.
The only store in Chappy, Martha's Vineyard, MA
In Chappy world stops to be what was 5 minutes ago across the water. Only farms, and beaches with very light traffic, limited by the three cars that fit on each ferry crossing.
Mytoi, The Japanese Garden, Chappy, Martha's Vineyard, MA
The small island invites you to explore and discover and this foray will bring you to the Japanese Garden, an unusual site close to the beach. After a short dive in the ocean, you bike back to the ferry, and for the cool off you stop again for a last dive in Chappy right near the harbor admiring from the bay the crossing contraption.
Edgartown Light House and Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, MA
When done you put your bike on the tiny ferry and stop in Edgartown again for a coffee before starting to bike north toward Vineyard Heaven. You cross the entire island through the middle, biking by fields and pastures that sometimes look more like Provence than Massachusetts.
Vineyard Haven's Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, MA
In Vineyard Heaven stop for dinner at Black Dog before biking a last leg to Oaks Bluff where you hop on the ferry that will bring you at sunset back to Woods Hole in the Cape.
