Even the good-uns make a big mistake every now and then.
The Bug's Media Glass House compilers have a lot of time for Sydney-based Nine News reporter Tiffiny Genders - a very competent and professional lass - but she committed an almighty howler on the network's 6pm news service last night.
Reporting on the news that Bruce Lehrmann had been identified as the person facing two rape charges in Queensland, she rounded off her report off with this: "…Lehrmann denied the Brittany Higgins allegations in a trial that was aborted because of juror misconduct and concerns about her state of mind."
Sadly, that's not even close enough to be considered for a cigar.
That Lehrmann trial was most definitely aborted because of juror misconduct but in no way, shape or form was it aborted because of concern over Higgins's mental health.
The ACT director of public prosecutions, Shane Drumgold, later dropped the case against Lehrmann, saying a retrial would pose an "unacceptable risk" to her health.
Even Drumgold didn't have the powers to abort a second trial that never happened in the first place.
The MGH's best guess - actually, make that hope - is that Tiffiny is sorely rueing the fact that a warning bell didn't ring in her head as she rehearsed in her mind that to-camera piece. It should have.
