Happy new year! I hope you have an enjoyable 2024, full of great reads.
As is tradition, here are the books I received for Christmas (apologies for the shadows, I had a bird on my head while I was organising them):
Stuck Up and Stupid by Angourie Rice and Kate Rice is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice, set on a beach full of Hollywood stars and influencers.
Begin Again by Helly Acton has Frankie reliving her life to avoid her kebab-related accident and to find fulfilment in her life in a Sliding Doors style novel.
4am edited by Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews is a collection of advice columns from the podcast Ask Shameless, complete with follow up replies.
The Disappearance of Astrid Bricard by Natasha Lester is about three generations of Bricard women – Mizza, muse to Dior; Astrid, overlooked designer and muse to Hawk Jones and Blythe, trying to make sense of life after her divorce. But the story of Mizza and Astrid is much deeper than the popular version of history. Why did Astrid disappear?
Wreck the Halls by Tessa Bailey is about rock stars and their families – Melody is the daughter of music royalty and Beat is the son of the lead singer of Melody's mum's band. They know each other well and it's up to them to get their mothers to perform one last show, as well as to notice what they mean to each other.
The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella finds Sasha over it all and on a holiday to try to recover but the resort she's at is nothing like she remembers. Finn is very different to Sasha, but together they start talking and discover they have more in common than they think…
Good Material by Dolly Alderton is about Andy after he's broken up with Jen. He's not sure why their relationship ended, but he needs to solve that puzzle even though he has a lot to learn.
Doppelganger by Naomi Klein is about a person with the same name, but very different views on social media etc. She follows the other Naomi Klein into the world of conspiracy theories and deep fakes.
Check and Mate by Ali Hazelwood is set in the world of chess. Mallory is over chess as it destroyed her family, but in one last tournament she beats world champion Nolan. Now she's climbing up the ranks and realising her love for the game…and others.
King of Wrath by Ana Huang is about billionaire CEO Dante and his forced engagement via blackmail to Vivian, who is her family's ticket to high society. Dante is determined to destroy the evidence and their engagement, but neither intended to fall in love.
Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon is about Chandler, a ghost writer for actor Finn. But he's also something else to her and their job spans both day and night between business and pleasure.
Dumb Money by Ben Mezrich is about the group on Reddit who noticed an opportunity in GameStop shares and made a lot of money – while many funds lost.
