No, we are not desperate gadget queens who have the have the latest stuff, well, yes, we are. In fact, things have changed at work and I can now salary sacrifice my car, so off to the Tesla showroom. Going to Apple instead would have cost less, but would not have been as much fun. It wasn't that we thought the salesmen were hot either, except, they were. We organised an 11.30am test drive and arrived early, of course. Hot Salesman ran through the 2024 Model 3 changes which includes a redesign front and back, including lights. It is quieter inside, and the AWD Long Range has a longer range, 620km up from 530km on our current car. So, a new car with more range will cost us $200 less a month. All good news, and it gets better. Although the test drive was in a rear-wheel-drive base model, we experienced a much nicer ride (but not as soft as we wanted). The cabin was quieter, and we thought the roof to be much darker as well. Tesla claims an all-new cabin, but apart from new mood lighting and a fabric-like dash trim, it looked the same to me. Is the steering wheel smaller? We'll answer that when we pick up the car. Direction (forward and back) and Park functions are now via a slider/button on the infotainment screen. The option only appears once a foot is on the brake pedal, so might take a little getting used to. The battery now charges up to 250kw max, giving us 282km in 15 minutes. On a recent trip, our current car took much longer. Hot Salesman also told us that we no longer have to charge to 80% to protect the longevity. We normally charge at home, and as we are renters, we will keep the current cable. A full charge takes about 36 hours. We hoped for softer suspension. Road trips in our current AWD Long Range get old, fast. There is no engine drone, but the tyre noise is only outdone by the bumpety-thump-bump over crappy roads. Rear legroom is tight for taller folk, and that won't change any time soon. Seat cooling for the front seats is a must-have, and Tesla has finally glued it it, but only at the front. Although our OS is up to date, the new test car has a system that is noticeably faster to respond. Will we trade our 2021 Tesla Model 3 AWD LR on a 2024 Tesla Model 3 LR? Yeah, probably.
