You'd think this last question for Bloganuary 2024 from the WordPress editors is about fear. But it's not.
It's about facing it. It's about courage.
I'm scared of a lot of things. Even things that don't really matter.
What am I most scared of? I don't really know.
Sometimes it's snails. I am terrified of snails. I don't like touching them. But I will if I have to.
Sometimes it's heights. I had a swimming coach who wanted to see if I had a knack for diving. I didn't. I couldn't bring myself to jump off the high diving board.
What would it take to face my fears? A whole lot of courage to just plough through it.
Where does this courage come from? I'm sure it's different for everyone. Alcohol. Bravado. Friends. For me it comes from faith.
In John's gospel Jesus says the following:
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
John 16:33 (NIV)
Take heart, he says! For he has overcome the world.
My trust in him who gave everything for me, who defeated sin and death for me, is enough when life gets terrifying.
Sometimes.
It's always an exercise of courage and trust for me. Sometimes peace comes with surrender. Other times it takes every ounce of my will.
But always, at the centre of it all, is Christ's arms outstretched for me.
