Sustainability
As revealed In 2023, Polestar 4 has the lowest carbon footprint of any Polestar. Production at Geely Holdings' SEA factory in Hangzhou Bay, China, uses green electricity with an I-REC hydro power certificate, and power from solar cells on roof of the plant.
Not only that, the is low-carbon aluminium includes recycled material, and is made at smelters using hydropower electricity.
The Polestar 4 Long range Single motor version has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 19.9 tCO2e, while the Long range Dual motor has one of 21.4 tCO2e. Aluminium is 22.4-24% of the carbon footprint, with steel and iron accounting for 20%, and finally the battery modules, at between 36-40%.
The cabin uses a mono-material approach with all layers of some components made from the same base material for easier recycling. Materials include the tailored knit textile, a new technique for the automotive industry, made of 100% recycled PET, as well as bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl, and traced leather from Bridge of Weir. The latter uses raw hides that are by-products of the food industry. The beasts come from Scottish farms rated by the Animal Protection Index as being of the highest global standard.
The 100% recycled polyester tailored knit upholstery was created by Polestar designers, together with the Swedish School of Textiles (Borås Textilhögskolan). The tailoring ensures as few offcuts as possible to reduce waste.
Inlay carpets are recycled PET, and floor carpets are ECONYL made partially from reclaimed fishing nets. Further economies are made with door trim panels made from NFPP (natural fibre polypropylene) which uses 50% less virgin plastic, and has a weight saving of up to 40%. MicroTech, is a bio-attributed vinyl that replaces crude oil with pine oil.
Performance
Polestar 4 is the brand's fastest production, with a 0-100 km/h of 3.8 seconds, its 400kW/686Nm permanent magnet, synchronous motors on the dual motor model.
There are single and dual motor options, with the single motors cars being rear wheel drive. The semi-active suspension is standard in dual-motor models, with 20" to 22" alloys shod with either Pirelli or Michelin tyres.
All Polestar 4's have a 100kWh battery, with the 400kW/686 Nm having a range of 580 km WLTP, and the 200kW/343Nm single motor RWD up to 610 km WLTP. The dual motor car uses a disconnect clutch to disengage the front electric motor when not needed, giving it extra range than otherwise would be the case.
The powered charge door opens to allow 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging. Polestar 4 comes with Bi-directional charging hardware, with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality coming later. VTL will give users the ability to plug in devices such as laptops, chargers, and any household item with a standard electric plug.
A standard heat pump uses ambient heat when preconditioning the cabin and battery for super efficient energy usage.
Technology
In Polestar 4's infotainment system uses Android Automotive OS, with the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform displayed on a 15.4" landscape-oriented screen.
As seen on existing Polestar, built-in Google allows Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay. This give users a truly connected experience. Optional Harman Kardon audio has 12 speakers with a 1,400-Watt channel-hybrid amplifier. There are an additional two headrest speakers added with optional Nappa Pack.
Over-the-air (OTA) updates will add and change features without the need for a visit to the dealer. We've seen BMW charging for features such as heated seats, so we will watch with interest to see if any other manufacturers charge for additional features. Polestar has ruled this out so far.
Safety and Driver aids
Like sister brand, Volvo, safety is, and has always been, a primary concern.
Safety and driver aid features include:
- Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye
- twelve cameras (including a driver monitoring camera)
- one radar
- twelve ultrasonic sensors
- hands-on detection in the steering wheel
- A 10.2-inch driver display
- head-up display (HUD) with 14.7-inch projection area (switches the text colour from white to yellow, improving visibility in snowy environments)
