What is in the All-New Toyota C-HR?

Toyota Australia will launch its all-new C-HR premium SUV early 2024. The Japanese auto giant is promising to have increased luxury and refinement over the outgoing model.

The outgoing C-HR brough a polarising look and made it kinda cool. By the time the new model arrives, C-HR was falling behind in refinement and inclusions, and frankly, looked a bit last decade.

The 3 grades are

GXL: $42,990
Koba: $49,990
GR Sport: $54,990

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said, "The new C-HR brings a new level of premium luxury to the small SUV segment, blending dynamic design and strong technology with a high level of specification and low fuel consumption," Mr Hanley said.

"The choice of two intelligent hybrid powertrain options combined with the European design and manufacture make the new C-HR more appealing than ever before," he said.

Toyota clings to its hybrid ethos with all C-HR models having hybrid-only powertrains. Is toyota misreading the room? That is hard to say. It is one of those companies that rarely gets it wrong, but as its competitors scramble to release all-electric offerings, Toyota risks missing the bus completely. Word on the street is that the Japanese power grid is suffering under the weight of privatisation, age, poor upkeep, and factional strife. This has meant that most Japanese car makers have been slow on the EV front, leaving China to streak past them at light speed.

Drivetrains:

To that end, C-HR will come with a 5^th generation 1.8L or 2.0L hybrid. The 103kw 1.8L unit drives the front wheels in GXL and Koba models. Its hybrid transaxle system is 15% increase in total output over the old model. The 72kW/142Nm petrol engine teams with a 70kW electric motor develops that is 17kW more powerful than the generation. The extra power comes thanks to 6 embedded magnets instead of 3.

GR Sport comes with all-wheel-drive (AWD) and a considerably beefier 145kW. The 112kW/188Nm 2.0-litre engine comes with a pair of electric motors, 83kW at the front and 30kw for the rear.

C-HR still uses a continuously variable transmission, but a new lithium-ion battery with 14% more storage, yet is much lighter.

Inside:

The exterior and drivetrains have had a makeover, and the cabin has also been given a decent seeing to.

C-HR has a 12.3" centre LCD screen with wireless Apple CarPlay, but Android Auto users will need to use a cable and USB. The system comes with satellite and cloud navigation, DAB+, and Toyota Connected Services.

There are 6 exterior colours, and six two-tone options for Koba and GR Sport. Sunglow is a brand new exterior colour. It joins Feverish Red as colours only available as a two-tone guise. Glacier White and Ink comes only as solid colours.
