TWEAKS AND UPDATES
DigitalNC: The State's Voice, Harnett County Newspaper with A Strong Editorial Voice, Added to DigitalNC. "Issues of The State's Voice, published in Dunn, NC from 1933-1935, have been added to DigitalNC. Published by O. J. (Oscar J.) Peterson, this paper is much more of an editorial vehicle than many other papers at the time. The entire front page is devoted to his thoughts on one or more news items or topics of the day. His other interest was in writing informational essays about various parts of the state, like the one in this issue about Orange County and Hillsboro(ugh)." That last bit is correcting the spelling to the current "Hillsborough," not expressing an opinion about the city. I hope.
WordPress: More Control Over the Content You Share. "There are currently very few options for individual users to control how their content is used for AI training, and we want to change that. That's why we're launching a new tool that lets you opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use such content for training models." I am really upset about this, I feel betrayed. That we have to opt-OUT of having our work stolen is so incredible to me.
AROUND THE INTERNET WORLD
Business Insider: How Google lost its way. "The downstream consequences of Google's graying loom large: a talent exodus, stale products, and an overreliance on its advertising cash cow. It also raises larger questions for Silicon Valley. What do you do when your formerly freewheeling juggernaut — the company that powered your reputation for boundless creativity and the idea that billions of dollars lurked behind any old line of code — loses its luster?"
404 Media: Amazon Turkers Who Train AI Say They're Locked Out of Their Work and Money. "A workers rights group for Mechanical Turk workers says that at least dozens of MTurk workers have been suddenly locked out of the Amazon-owned microlabor platform, suggesting a widespread issue that is denying these people the ability to work and in some cases denying them access to money they have already made on the platform."
Portugal Resident: Coimbra's stunning Joanina Library to digitise 30,000 books. "The University of Coimbra (UC) has announced an €8 million project to digitise 30,000 century-old books from the Joanina Library in Coimbra, often considered one of the most beautiful in the world. According to a statement released by the university, the goal is to have the 30,000 century-old books housed on the library's main floor digitised and free for all to access by 2030." There's a picture of the library with this article and it's breathtaking.
SECURITY & LEGAL

Bloomberg: Alphabet, Epic Games Hit Impasse in Google Play Antitrust Talks. US District Judge James Donato asked the companies to try to reach a settlement that would resolve Epic's antitrust allegations. But in a filing late Wednesday, lawyers for Alphabet and Epic notified the judge they were at an 'impasse.'"

RESEARCH & OPINION

ReliefWeb: Polio mapping goes high tech. "When polio vaccinators fanned out across areas of the Republic of Congo last year to stop an outbreak, they carried a powerful new tool in their pockets: cellphones that tracked their progress as they went door to door. Equipped with a mobile app, the phones sent data back to a command center where staff could see on a digital map if homes were missed and redirect teams on the ground." Good morning, Internet...
