NEW RESOURCES
University of North Carolina: Library develops all-digital Watergate exhibit. "Old enough to remember daytime TV being pre-empted for the Senate Watergate Committee hearings? Or young enough to wonder why every scandal seems to end in '-gate'? The University Libraries' new digital-only exhibition, 'A Southern View of Watergate: Tar Heels' Impact on a Nationwide Scandal,' appeals to both. It provides a valuable record of events from the 1970s and a resource for today's discussion about presidential immunity."
American University: Cybersecurity Leaders Launch New Online Platform to Close Gaps in Understanding Cyber Policy. "'Start Here: Cyber Fundamentals for Policymakers' is designed to help cybersecurity and privacy professionals, government officials, and students get up-to-speed on the fundamental context, players, history and issues underlying the key cyber public policy issues of the day."
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: NHTSA Urges Everyone to Check for Recalls During Vehicle Safety Recalls Week. "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new tool allowing consumers to check for recalls using only a vehicle's license plate number, making it even easier to learn about new recalls."
TWEAKS AND UPDATES
Search Engine Land: Google is updating Local Services Ads verification process. "Starting from the end of 2024, certain professionals featured in your Local Services Ads, such as lawyers, must undergo an identity check in addition to the license check to confirm their affiliation with your business, according to an email sent to advertisers by Google. To maintain the continuity of your Local Services Ads, the business owner or senior partner in your firm or practice must also pass an identity check. Moreover, any featured professionals will be required to undergo an identity check to continue appearing in your ads." This seems like something I should be reading in 2014 rather than 2024, but better late than never.
Mashable: Elon Musk's X has already backed off its new anti-trans hate policy. "On Thursday, X updated its 'Abuse and Harassment' policy to add a new section called 'Use of Prior Names and Pronouns.' According to this updated policy, a post would receive reduced visibility if it misgendered a user or used their former name and the targeted user reported the post."

AROUND THE INTERNET WORLD
Bloomberg: Banks Stuck With X Debt Held Refinancing Talks With Elon Musk. "A group of seven banks, led by the New York-based lender, has been stuck holding the debt since 2022. They've repeatedly renewed an agreement not to individually offload their holdings, with the goal of coordinating a sale when X — formerly known as Twitter — is on firmer financial footing with stable advertising revenues, subscription growth and further traction from a planned peer-to-peer payments platform, one of the people said."
Purdue University: New online master's in AI from Purdue is designed for people who build AI systems and for people who use them. SECURITY & LEGAL
CNBC: Former Twitter execs sue Musk and X for more than $128 million in severance. "Former Twitter executives including CEO Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, head of legal Vijaya Gadde and General Counsel Sean Edgett filed a new lawsuit against Elon Musk and X Corp. in federal court arguing that they are owed $128 million in unpaid severance."
Ars Technica: Windows 0-day patch delay allowed stealthy North Korean rootkit to flourish. "Hackers backed by the North Korean government gained a major win when Microsoft left a Windows zero-day unpatched for six months after learning it was under active exploitation. Even after Microsoft patched the vulnerability last month, the company made no mention that the North Korean threat group Lazarus had been using the vulnerability since at least August to install a stealthy rootkit on vulnerable computers."
RESEARCH & OPINION
Stanford Medicine: Stanford Medicine uses augmented reality for real-time data visualization during surgery. "A team of Stanford Medicine doctors and biomedical engineers are among the first to integrate a new augmented reality tool into surgical practice.
